The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV has the potential to change the planet’s transportation landscape as this “no compromise” five-seat commuter car goes an almost unbelievable 238 miles on a single charge. And that’s just one of the astounding facts about this new zero-emissions vehicle. On a recent road test in California’s Silicon Valley, we discovered all the pros and cons about the Bolt.
The exterior was designed by a joint Korea-American team in Seoul. Fortunately, it has a modern and sporty look rather than something wacky. Inside, the first-gen Chevy Bolt could tone down the space-age vibe and amp up its chic-luxe factor, akin to the gorgeous 2017 Chevy Malibu interior. However, the Bolt’s 10.2-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation, climate, audio, apps, wireless, charging and energy controls is way beyond any EV on the market today.
As for performance, the Bolt is a mean green machine like no other. Our road test showcased the Bolt’s ability to gain miles via a “low” performance mode along with paddle-driven energy regeneration abilities. At one point during our drive through a verdant California Central Coast forest, our Bolt went from 141 miles to 146 miles in just a few minutes while gliding down a curvy mountain highway. The all-torque-all-the-time acceleration is quick and fun, but the somewhat bumpy suspension and stiff steering could be improved in future models.
Chevy is partnering with AeroVironment to bundle 240-volt charging stations (around $1,300) into loan programs although in-garage installation is extra. With this Level 2 charging station in place and equipped with a DC fast charger, the Chevy Bolt can energize 90 more miles of pure electric driving power in just 30 minutes.
