Claiming a class-leading 27-mile electric range, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In aims to make its mark in the hotly contested hi-tech family sedan segment. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has already won lots of praise for its much-improved refinement and driving dynamics, along with great real-world economy. So, does the plug-in version justify the added cost? It depends.
With proposals already on the table in some cites for “electric only” zones in downtown areas, having a car with a significant range in EV mode might prove indispensable. However, if your only consideration in shopping for a hybrid is to save money, it goes without saying that the fuel savings on a brand new plug-in hybrid will take a very long time to pay for themselves.
With a larger battery pack and a slightly more powerful electric motor, the Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid accelerates with a little more verve than its non plug-in sibling: 0-60 comes up in about 8 seconds flat, quicker than a Ford Fusion Energi or Toyota Prius, but just shy of the times posted by a 2016 Chevy Volt. The Sonata is quieter and offers a smoother ride than any of the competition, however, thanks to its slippery .25 drag coefficient. Plus, its redesigned interior wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury car.
